Day Seven- Mary Queen of Scots, Zorses, and Hadrian's Wall

As per the Info Centre Lady's recommendation, we started day seven by heading into Jedburgh to mosey around. The Info Centre girl in Jedburgh recommended a nearby coffee shop to have breakfast. It was in this coffee shop that I had the most amazing mug of Cadbury hot chocolate, complete with whip cream, marshmallows, and a flake bar. It was bliss in a cup! I thought I'd better partake in a bit of healthiness for breakfast, so I also had a chocolate cornflake cereal bar treat. It was a breakfast of champions!!!

With bellies full we walked up to Mary Queen of Scots house, which provided a great mini lesson in Tudor/Elizabethan history. A short stroll away, up yet another hill was the Jedburgh Castle jail which was interesting but not what we thought it was going to be. Once we were done there we climbed into Clyde and headed south towards England and Hadrian's wall.

It didn't take long before Liam was distracted by the Jedburgh Forest and Farm, home to goats, pigs, sheep, llamas, donkeys, deer, a Zorse (zebra horse mix) and various bird of prey. We bought two bags of feed and Liam had a grand old time feeding the creatures. I don't feed creatures other than my cats, so I just took pics. Once Dr. Doolittle had his fill of creature feeding we continued on into Northern England to find Hadrian's wall.

Interestingly, there are several spots along the highway that parallels Hadrian's wall where you can stop and climb onto the actual wall. On one site there was even a complete military outpost, where you can walk onto and into the ruins. It amazing to think that the rocks you are walking on and touching were placed there almost two thousand years ago!

After two nights of camping we decided to spoil ourselves and spend the evening in a hotel, so we drove north and headed to Gretna, a town located on the England/Scotland border. Once there we popped into yet another tourist info centre, and for 4 pounds the gentleman working there managed to find a steal of a deal at the " Gretna Hall Hotel", a well known, historic wedding venue and hotel.

Not sure where tomorrow's journey will take us, but we're booked to catch the ferry to the Isle of Aaron on Friday evening, so we will be heading in that general direction tomorrow after exploring the Gretna townsite.

  1. Hey McLauchlan's, This is my favorite channel until you return home. Haven't seen any one in a red golf shirt yet. No joy for Celtic in Philly, but it was fun. Looks like you are having great weather and a great time. See you in a couple of weeks.
